When Your Shutters Stop Working the Way They Should
Plantation shutters are built to last — but not to be ignored. A louvre that drops, a panel that binds, a tilt rod that has worked loose: these are not emergencies, but they are signals. Left unattended, small faults become expensive ones.
The harder problem is finding someone who actually knows what they are looking at. Carpenters and handymen can generally address timber. Plantation shutters are a different matter — the tolerances, the tension mechanisms, the way composite and hardwood behave differently over time. Generalist experience is rarely enough.
This is what Shutter Installation has done exclusively since 2009.
Specialists, Not Generalists
Colin founded Shutter Installation as a family business, and fifteen years on, every survey and repair is still led by him personally. That continuity matters: when he assesses your shutters, you are speaking to the same person who will carry out the work, not a call centre, not a subcontractor.
We work across Richmond, Kingston upon Thames, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Teddington, Hampton, East Sheen, Kew, Putney, Surbiton, and the wider South West London and Surrey area.
Every visit includes an honest diagnosis, a clear explanation, and a fixed price before anything begins. No guesswork. No upselling. A [INTERNAL: /guarantee] 10-year personal guarantee on all our work.

Diagnosing the Problem
How do I know whether my shutters need repairing or replacing entirely? The general rule: if the problem is isolated — a single louvre, a hinge, a tilt rod — repair is almost always the right answer. Full panel or full installation replacement becomes relevant when the damage is structural, when a panel has warped beyond recovery, or when the cumulative cost of repeated repairs exceeds the value of the product. Colin makes this distinction clearly and honestly at the assessment visit, before any decision is made.
My shutters squeak when I open or close them. Is this serious? Not immediately — but it should not be left. Squeaking is usually the first sign that a hinge or tilt rod connector is working under incorrect tension. It is not an emergency, but it indicates wear that will accelerate if ignored. The earlier it is addressed, the simpler and less expensive the repair.
A panel has shifted and is leaving a visible gap against the frame. What is happening? Most commonly, a hinge has partially failed or the frame has moved slightly as a result of the building's natural settlement. Both are diagnosable and resolvable. A visible gap does not automatically mean the panel needs replacing.
My louvres are no longer aligned — some sit higher than others across the panel. Why? Louvre misalignment occurs when rotational tension is uneven — either through pin wear or partial disconnection of the tilt rod. This is one of the most common issues in installations older than five years and is resolved without replacing the panel.
My shutters are relatively new. Can they already have problems? Yes — and usually for one of two reasons. First: an installation that did not respect the correct tolerances, leaving panels or frames under stress from the outset. Second: an environment with significant humidity variation — kitchens and bathrooms in particular — which accelerates the natural behaviour of timber. Age alone is not the only relevant factor.
My shutters were installed by a company that no longer exists. Can you still help? Yes — and this is one of the most common situations we encounter. We assess what is in front of us, not what is on the original receipt. As long as the shutters are repairable or replaceable by component, the absence of the original installer is not a barrier.
Types of Fault
My tilt rod has disconnected from the louvres. Is this a complicated repair? Not for someone who knows the mechanism. The connector staples between the tilt rod and each blade are a known wear point, particularly in installations with heavy daily use. The repair is straightforward — but it requires knowing exactly where and how the system distributes mechanical stress, because an incorrect reconnection reproduces the problem within months.
A louvre has snapped completely. Can it be replaced individually? Yes. Individual louvres can be replaced without touching the rest of the panel, provided the original specification can be identified. If the colour or profile is no longer available as an exact match, we discuss the options honestly before any decision is made.
My hinges are visibly worn and the panel drops slightly when I open it. What does the repair involve? Hinge replacement is a standard repair, not a major intervention. It does require familiarity with the specific hinge type used — there are significant differences between the fixing systems of different manufacturers, and an incorrectly replaced hinge recreates the problem.
The frame of my shutters has partially pulled away from the wall. Can they be saved? It depends on the nature of the separation. A frame that has pulled away from the wall due to failed fixings is refastened. A frame that has structurally deformed due to excessive moisture or mechanical damage is assessed individually — in some cases, frame replacement is more cost-effective than repair.
The paint or finish on my shutters has deteriorated. Do you offer refinishing? Speak to us about your specific situation. Surface finish deterioration is not usually linked to operational function, but in certain cases — particularly in older installations or high-humidity rooms — it can be a signal worth investigating more broadly.
My shutters have been struck and a panel is structurally cracked. Can it be repaired? A surface crack in solid timber is often cosmetic. A crack at a joint or through the full thickness of a panel is a structural issue — in these cases, panel replacement is the correct and more cost-effective long-term answer.
By Shutter Style
Full height shutters — what faults occur most frequently? Hinge wear and louvre tension loss are by far the most common. In older hardwood installations, seasonal timber movement can cause panels to bind against the frame during summer months when humidity rises and the timber expands slightly within the frame.
Tier-on-tier shutters — where does wear concentrate? The lower section opens far more frequently than the upper, which means the lower-tier hinges accumulate disproportionate wear. The mid-rail junction is also a point of attention — if the alignment between the two sections begins to shift, it is usually the first sign that the lower hinges have partially failed.
Café style shutters — are they more vulnerable to certain conditions? Yes. Café style covers only the lower half of the window and is frequently found in kitchens and bathrooms — high-humidity environments. Solid timber in these conditions works harder than in rooms with controlled humidity. If repair becomes a recurring intervention, Polywood is the recommended option for replacement.
Bay window shutters — can these be repaired or do they require a different specialist? They can be repaired — but bay window configurations have angled or curved geometry that makes diagnosis more complex than a straight window. We have extensive experience with bay installations across South West London and approach repairs with the same diagnostic process as any other configuration.
Tracked shutter systems — what are the typical problems? Tracked systems have a completely different wear profile from hinged shutters. Track debris and wear, panel misalignment within the track, and connector fatigue are the most commonly encountered issues. These are not standard carpentry repairs and should not be treated as such.
My shutters are on a Velux or roof window. Do you work with these? Every atypical configuration is assessed individually at the diagnostic visit. Contact us with details of your setup and we will confirm whether and how we can help before arranging a visit.
Materials — Hardwood vs Polywood
How do hardwood and Polywood age differently? Hardwood is a natural timber product — it responds to seasonal humidity and temperature changes throughout its life. This is not a flaw, it is the nature of the material, and it is managed well with periodic professional servicing. Polywood is an engineered composite: dimensionally stable, moisture-resistant, and significantly better suited to kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms with intense south-facing sun exposure.
Can Polywood be repaired in the same way as hardwood? For most fault types — louvre re-tensioning, tilt rod reconnection, hinge replacement, panel swap — yes. The material difference influences the diagnosis more than the repair process itself.
My hardwood shutters have developed fine surface cracks in winter. Is this serious? Surface hairline cracking in solid timber is common during periods of low humidity — typical in centrally heated homes during winter months. It is usually cosmetic and does not affect structural integrity. Cracks at joints or through the full thickness of a panel are a different matter and require direct assessment.
My timber shutters have swollen and the panel no longer fits in the frame. What should I do? Do not force the panel — forced operation accelerates hinge wear and can distort the frame. Seasonal timber swelling is normal and usually reverses as ambient humidity stabilises. If the problem persists, a professional adjustment of the tolerances resolves it without replacement.
Replacement & Matching
Can I replace a single panel from an older installation without changing everything? Yes, in most cases. Where the original specification was standard — profile, colour, and finish, matching is achievable. Where the original manufacturer is no longer active or the specification was non-standard, we assess the closest available match and present the options clearly before any decision. We do not promise a match we cannot deliver.
My shutters are over ten years old. Is it worth repairing them or better to replace them entirely? Age alone is not a sufficient criterion. Well-maintained solid hardwood shutters can perform excellently for fifteen or twenty years. The real assessment is made on the structural condition of the frame, panels, and mechanisms — not the installation date. Colin will be direct about this at the assessment visit.
Can I order new shutters through you if replacement turns out to be the right answer? Yes. Shutter Installation supplies and installs new made-to-measure shutters in hardwood and polycomposite across all window configurations. If the assessment indicates that replacement is more cost-effective than repair, you can proceed directly with us without searching for a separate supplier.
Preventive Maintenance
How often should my plantation shutters be professionally serviced? For most domestic installations in normal use, a professional check every three to five years is sufficient to maintain smooth operation and significantly extend the product's lifespan. High-humidity rooms or south-facing windows may benefit from more frequent attention.
What can I do as a homeowner between professional visits? Wipe louvres with a dry or slightly damp cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners and excess moisture on hardwood. Never force a panel or louvre that has begun to resist. If you notice a change in how your shutters operate, address it early. Small faults are almost always less expensive to resolve than the consequences of leaving them.
Do you offer a scheduled annual maintenance service? For clients with installations across multiple rooms or larger configurations, we are happy to discuss a maintenance arrangement tailored to specific needs. Contact us directly for details.
Do my hinges need lubricating? Quality hinges do not require regular lubrication. If a hinge has started to squeak or resist, the issue is almost always physical wear, not lack of lubricant. Applying lubricant to a worn hinge temporarily masks the symptom without addressing the cause.
Areas Covered
Which areas do you cover for repairs and maintenance? We cover Richmond, Kingston upon Thames, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Teddington, Hampton, East Sheen, Kew, Putney, Surbiton, New Malden, Esher, Thames Ditton, Cobham, Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames, Molesey, Tolworth, Raynes Park, Merton, and surrounding areas across South West London and Surrey. If you are unsure whether you fall within our coverage area, call us directly — we will confirm immediately.
Do you travel further afield for larger jobs? For substantial work or specific situations, we are happy to discuss visits outside our standard coverage area. Contact us with the details and we will confirm whether we can help.
Appointments, Pricing & Process
What happens during an assessment visit? Colin comes to you, inspects the shutters in detail, diagnoses the root cause of the problem — not just the visible symptom — and explains clearly what the repair involves and what it will cost, before any work begins. There is no obligation to proceed after the assessment.
Is there a call-out charge for the assessment? Contact us directly to discuss current terms. We are always transparent about any costs involved before confirming a visit.
How long does a repair typically take? Standard repairs — louvre re-tensioning, tilt rod reconnection, hinge replacement — are usually completed within the same visit. Panel replacements or structural interventions may require a second visit if materials need to be ordered. You will know exactly what to expect from the assessment visit.
Do you offer a guarantee on repair work? Yes. Colin's 10-year personal guarantee covers all work — the same guarantee that applies to new installations. This is not an anonymous company policy. It is a personal guarantee from the person who actually worked on your shutters.
Do you offer appointments outside standard working hours? Yes — early mornings, evenings, and weekends where needed. We understand that organising a home visit around a working week is not always straightforward.
How quickly can you attend? We are a specialist family business, not a national network with rigid scheduling. We always give an honest indication of availability when you make contact and do everything we can to attend as promptly as possible.
