Bay window shutter installation: what makes a precise fit

Bay window shutter installation depends on accurate angles, a level frame and enough clearance for every panel to open properly. Each section of the bay must be measured as part of one complete run. A precise fit keeps the louvres aligned, the gaps even and the panels moving without catching.

Why are bay windows harder to fit?

A bay is several openings joined at different angles, and the walls, sill and window frames are rarely perfectly square. A small measuring error at one corner can move the next frame out of line, leave uneven gaps or stop a panel opening fully. The fitting therefore has to treat the bay as one connected shape rather than a row of separate windows.

The survey checks every angle, the depth of the reveal, handles, vents and anything else that could obstruct the shutters. The frame position is then planned so the panels follow the bay cleanly while leaving access to the windows behind them.

How should bay window shutters be measured?

Bay shutters should be measured from several points across every opening because older sills and reveals can vary from top to bottom. The installer also checks the angles where each section meets and the most suitable fixing surface. Those measurements determine the frame layout, panel widths and the clearances needed for hinges and handles.

Templates can help with awkward corners, but they do not replace checking how the finished panels will open. The important result is not just a frame that fits the opening. It is a complete shutter run that remains level and usable around the whole bay.

What happens during the fitting?

  • The room, sill and nearby furniture are protected before work starts.

  • The frames are assembled, offered into the bay and levelled before final fixing.

  • Each panel is hung and adjusted so the gaps remain even across the full run.

  • Louvres, hinges, catches and panel clearance are checked in every position.

  • Fixings are finished neatly and the room is cleared before the job is handed over.

What are the signs of a poor bay-window fit?

Uneven gaps, panels that rub, louvres that do not line up and heavy use of filler can all point to a frame that was not measured or levelled correctly. A panel should stay where it is placed, close flush and open without striking the next section of the bay.

Some movement can be corrected by adjusting hinges, packing or re-squaring the frame. If an existing installation looks wrong, it is often worth assessing the fit before replacing the shutters themselves.

Can shutters bought elsewhere be fitted to a bay?

Shutters bought elsewhere can often be fitted to a bay if their dimensions and frame layout suit the opening. We check the supplied parts, compare them with the bay and explain any adaptation needed before fitting starts. Ex-display or previously fitted shutters may need more adjustment because they were made for a different opening.

If the shutters have not been ordered yet, measuring the bay first is safer. It avoids committing to panels that cannot achieve the clearances or angles the window needs.
