My Shutter Supplier Cannot Help: What Are My Repair Options?
Keep any invoice, order drawing or guarantee you have, but do not worry if you cannot find the original brand. Clear photographs and a description of the fault are enough to start an enquiry.

Quick answer
If your original shutter supplier cannot help, an independent specialist may still be able to repair the set. Shutter Installation repairs interior plantation shutters supplied by other companies where the surrounding structure is sound and suitable parts are available. We assess the fault before deciding what needs replacing and what can stay.
Key takeaways
- An unavailable supplier or expired guarantee does not, by itself, mean the shutters need replacing.
- The original brand and paperwork help, but you can make an enquiry without them.
- A repair needs to work with the existing shutter. Parts availability, the surrounding condition and the expected finish all matter.
Should you contact the original supplier first?
If the original supplier is still available and you think the problem may be covered, check with them before arranging separate work. They may hold the order specification and know which product, finish and components were fitted. Keep their response with any invoice, order drawing or guarantee you have.
Ask whether they can help with the particular fault and, if relevant, whether another company carrying out work would affect the remaining cover. A supplier offering only new installations is a different situation from one waiting for a replacement part. Knowing why they cannot help makes the next enquiry more useful.
If the supplier has stopped trading, check whether the paperwork names a manufacturer or another guarantee provider. Contact that provider about any remaining cover before paying for separate work. If no original support is available, you can ask us about a paid repair, including for shutters fitted before you moved into the property.
A guarantee is separate from your statutory rights. Citizens Advice explains how warranties and guarantees work if you need help with the original purchase. Our repair assessment establishes the work we can offer; it does not decide a dispute with another supplier.
Can shutters be assessed if you do not know who made them?
Yes. Start with photographs of the complete shutter and the affected area, even if you have no receipt or brand name. We can look at the panel arrangement, louvres, hinges and visible fittings to work out what needs a closer check. Missing paperwork does not prevent an enquiry.
An old order email, drawing or photograph of a label can help identify the range. If you have a loose piece that has already come away, keep it for the assessment. Do not dismantle an otherwise secure panel to find a mark or obtain a photograph.
Explain what changed in ordinary terms: a panel now catches the frame, several slats fall shut, or one slat has snapped. Mention recent decorating, a knock or replacement windows if the problem began afterwards. You do not need to identify the component or diagnose the fault yourself.
A photograph may narrow the options, but it does not establish every fixing, measurement or hidden area of damage. We confirm what the proposed repair involves before agreeing the work. Our plantation shutter repair service covers the existing-shutter faults we assess.
What happens if the original replacement part is unavailable?
An unavailable original part does not settle whether a repair is possible. We need to check whether a suitable replacement can work with the retained shutter, or whether the existing component can be put right without replacing it. A part that looks similar may still have the wrong dimensions, shape or fixing arrangement.
The condition around the fault matters too. A compatible louvre will not solve a split panel that can no longer hold it securely. Equally, a panel that has dropped may need its alignment corrected rather than a whole new shutter set.
We will explain when the available repair would leave a difference in appearance or require work beyond the failed part. Our repair-or-replace guide covers how condition and the extent of damage affect that decision.
Repair options after an assessment
| Assessment finding | Option to consider |
|---|---|
| Existing parts are sound but the panel or louvres no longer sit correctly | Adjustment or repair of the existing set, once the cause is confirmed |
| One component is damaged and a compatible replacement is available | Replace that component while retaining the sound surrounding shutter |
| A panel is damaged beyond a viable repair | Check whether a replacement panel can work with the retained frame and fittings |
| Suitable parts cannot be sourced, or the remaining structure is unsound | Compare the extent of replacement needed before agreeing a new set |
Will a replacement part match the old shutters?
A replacement needs to fit and operate correctly, but an identical appearance cannot always be promised. The same colour name can look different across manufacturers, and a new finish may look brighter or have a different sheen beside older shutters.
For example, replacing one broken louvre may be mechanically straightforward while leaving a visible colour difference. That does not automatically make replacement of the whole set necessary. It gives you a choice to discuss: accept the agreed difference, consider wider finish work where suitable, or compare a larger replacement.
The quote should identify what we will replace and what we will leave untouched. If appearance across the whole window is important, say so before agreeing the work. Restoration of older shutters is a separate assessment of condition and finish, rather than an automatic addition to every repair.
What does an independent shutter repair cost?
Our indicative average prices are about £25 per replacement louvre, £50 per tilt rod for repair or replacement, and £25 per dropped panel for realignment. These include VAT, the stated compatible parts and labour, with no separate call-out or travel charge. They are examples of typical work, rather than fixed prices for every set.
A dropped-panel realignment does not include a new panel or additional replacement hardware. An unusual component, difficult access or damage extending into the frame can change the job. Several faults should be considered together so the quote covers the work needed to leave the set usable.
The quote should also make clear whether parts need ordering, whether shutters need to be removed, and whether a return visit or finish work is included. The plantation shutter repair cost guide gives more examples and explains their inclusions.
What guarantee covers the new repair?
Our agreed repair work has a 12-month workmanship guarantee covering faults attributable to our work, such as a repaired panel dropping or louvres becoming loose. Cosmetic damage and broken louvres may be chargeable depending on the cause. This is not blanket cover for every part of an older shutter set.
An independent repair does not mean we take over the original supplier's product guarantee. The agreed job and our own workmanship cover need to be understood separately from any remaining original cover. If something we repaired develops a problem, contact us with the details so it can be assessed against that work.
Before booking, you should know what we are repairing, which parts are being replaced and what result to expect. That is especially useful when the original manufacturer is unknown or an exact finish match is unavailable.
How do you arrange an assessment?
Send a photograph of the whole shutter and a close-up of the problem, along with a short description of what happens when you use it. Include your location and any supplier details you have. If there is no paperwork, say so and send the photographs anyway.
Tell us if the panel feels loose, has dropped or needs force to move. Stop using an insecure or jammed shutter while you arrange advice. You do not need to take it apart or buy a repair kit before making an enquiry.
You can contact Shutter Installation for an assessment. We will explain the repair options and confirm the work and price before starting, including any limits on parts or matching.
