Some installations are defined by a single striking room. Others demonstrate what plantation shutters can do across an entire home — from the ground floor kitchen to the staircase landing. The Esher property we completed in March 2026 was the latter. Seven rooms, forty linear metres of bespoke shutters, and a brief that demanded absolute consistency throughout.
The Brief: One Visual Language, Every Window
The client had recently completed an extensive renovation of their detached KT10 property — Carrara marble bathroom, shaker kitchen with island, herringbone oak flooring throughout the ground floor. What remained unresolved was the windows. A patchwork of curtains and roller blinds that jarred against an otherwise considered interior.
The brief was clear: plantation shutters, white, throughout. Same louvre size. Same material family in like-for-like rooms. A visual language that would read coherently across the entire house.
The Survey: Where Every Installation Is Actually Planned
I visit every Esher and KT10 property personally for the initial survey — it is where the entire job is planned, not just measured. The two-hour survey here covered every window: the living room's three large garden-facing frames, the paired bedroom windows, a sloped ceiling bathroom window, twin kitchen windows above the worktop, a recessed bay window niche, and the staircase at half-landing level.
Key decisions made on site:
Hardwood throughout the bedrooms and living areas — warmer tone, better grain match against the neutral grey-taupe palette.
Polywood for the bathroom and kitchen — completely waterproof, warp-resistant, and the only sensible choice in rooms with underfloor heating and daily steam.
89mm louvres throughout — consistent across all seven rooms, so the house reads as a whole.
The Living Room: Full Height Across Three Panels
The result - and why it works
Three south-southwest-facing windows, full height from floor to ceiling, calibrated as a unified composition across the wall. When the louvres are open, the garden view is uninterrupted. When closed, the shutters create a strong white grid that curtains — however expensive — cannot replicate.
The practical gain matters here too. These windows receive powerful afternoon sun. Being able to tilt louvres to redirect light upward — filling the room from above while eliminating glare — is something no roller blind offers with any precision.
The Bedrooms: Precision Across Multiple Panels
The master bedroom has a wide configuration — two sash-style windows side by side. The risk with multi-panel installations is that the result reads as individual frames rather than a coherent whole. The answer is panel sizing accurate to within a millimetre, so louvre rails align horizontally across the full span when closed.
Hardwood, painted to match the window frames, disappeared into the architecture. In winter, the same shutters closed make a meaningful difference to draughts — something every customer in a period Surrey property comments on after their first winter.
The Bathroom: Polywood in a Marble Setting
A full Carrara marble bathroom — walls, floor, freestanding bath, chrome heated towel rail. And a window set into a sloped ceiling at 45 degrees.
The frame for this window was fabricated at the precise angle of the slope, mounted flush inside the reveal, with louvres operating on the correct horizontal axis despite the angled frame. The result looks as though the room was designed around it.
Polywood is the only correct choice in a room of this specification. It is impervious to humidity, will not warp or discolour, and after ten years in a steam-filled bathroom will look exactly as it does on installation day.
The Kitchen: Three Windows, One Consistent Treatment
Three rear elevation windows — two above the worktop, one above the sink, set slightly lower. In a layout like this, visual consistency across all three is non-negotiable. Any difference in panel width or louvre alignment reads immediately against the clean horizontal line of the shaker cabinet run.
Beyond aesthetics: plantation shutter installation in a kitchen can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. No fabric degrading with steam. No cord mechanisms jamming with grease. Advantages that compound over the years of daily use.
The Bay Window Niche: The Detail Other Installers Decline
A deep, fully recessed bay niche with angled side walls and a display sill. I have spoken to Esher homeowners told by other companies that their bay niche was "too complicated" for shutters. That is a commercial assessment, not a technical one.
Every installation we do is bespoke from the first measurement to the last fixing. The shutters sit within this niche as though they were original to the house — which, in a well-executed plantation shutter installation, is always the aim.
The Staircase: No Window Too Narrow
The half-landing staircase window is often the afterthought — too narrow, too awkward, left with a net curtain or nothing. In a home, this was considered, and it was not left untreated.
A single bespoke panel, fitted into the reveal, louvres angled for light without a street-level view. Same white. Same louvre size. Same material. The finishing full stop of a whole-house installation.
What a Whole-House Installation Actually Achieves
When every window carries the same treatment — same louvre size, same material family, same geometry — the house reads as a unified whole. Light behaves consistently from room to room. Visitors notice the house, not the windows. Plantation shutters that are doing their job properly disappear into the fabric of the building.
This Esher property, already renovated to a high standard, needed a window solution that would not compromise what had been built in every other room. Under a 10-year personal guarantee, these shutters will deliver that for at least a decade — without requiring anything beyond an occasional wipe-down.
